Martin OOL-17 Whiskey Sunset Acoustic Guitar
We absolutely LOVE Martin acoustic guitars here at TMA, and this OOL-17 Whiskey Sunset manufactured in 2018, is no exception.
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!! And the only NOS OOL-17 available in Australia.
Flawless.... NOS (new 'old' stock) with only the slightest hint (under bright lighting) of ever being played apparent on the tortoiseshell pickguard.
You will not find a newer 'second hand' Martin anywhere!
Purchased from Brisbane Australia, just last week, we were super excited to have this Martin land as none of us had played a OOL-17 before.
Acoustically and mic'ed it rivals any guitar we've played (both fingerstyle and with a pick) upwards of $3k. It's amazingly light, yet produces a fullness and depth (in both bass and treble) reminiscent of a vintage Martin 1930's guitar we sold many moons ago (for 4.5 times the price!). It's surprisingly loud for it's weight and size - not dreadnought loud - but seriously impressive nonetheless. And much more comfortable as a sit down guitar.
The 17 series emulates the tone and feel of Martin 'parlour' guitars that date back to the 20's and 30's era - and we reckon they've nailed it with this model.
The OOL-17 is made of all solid body tonewoods - solid body mahogany back & sides & a solid sitka spruce top finished to show the amazing wood grain both through the natural B/S finish as well as the Whiskey Sunset top that is unique to the 17 series. We love the satin like finish and vintage sunburst: It's as nice as we've seen on guitars twice the price.
Indian rosewood accompanies the fingerboard and bridge, exquisite grained ivoroid binding (just perfectly finished - seriously, the photos don't compare to the eye), cream coloured tuners and a modified low oval neck with a modern taper enables superior playability from the 1st fret to the 14th.
What probably strikes us most about this 17 series is the resonance achieved from the 'sloped-shoulder' construction design - it has the same depth as other OO Martin's - but extends the sound chamber somewhat and produces a sustain quality where we could still hear the note, vibrato and 'air' several seconds after striking it.
The action is factory set and the intonation is now perfect. If you're a chord player, the work is done. If you fancy playing some lead however we'd personally file the bridge a 'smidge' to make 12th-14th fret playing just a touch easier. Either way, we had no dramas jamming Hotel California, Dead or Alive and Tommy Emmanuel - effortlessly.
If you've always dreamt about owning a Martin, but don't have $5-$10k to burn, then this guitar might just be what you're looking for. The craftmanship is superb and the 'lower' spec finish (Satin as opposed to high gloss) really allows the woodgrain to shine. You can seriously smell the wood.
The guitars comes with an equally brand new, custom fit Martin case from TKL.
Inspections welcome as the pics simply won't do it justice. we've tried...
